Tasting Notes
“Shading” is an artistic technique in which variations of dark elements come together to produce a much more complex, overall image. It doesn’t get much darker than the three Rhône Valley varietals of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvédre. These three varietals are co-fermented to produce a profound, deeply shaded garnet blend that exhibits aromas of ripe plum and black currant with a hint of leather. Flavors of black cherry cola and spice such as cinnamon and pepper collaborate to create a beautifully constructed balance on the palate. The richness of this wine is carried all the way through its finish and leaves lingering flavors of sage dried cherries.
Winemaker Notes
The Shading is a Rhone red blend made with 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 25% Mourvédre grown at Kærskov Vineyard in the Los Olivos District of Santa Barbara County. All three varietals were picked on the same night and then the grapes were crushed and co-fermented together in small box fermenters. After a slow, cool fermentation the finished wine was aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 15% new oak. This wine is a perfect pairing for any barbecue or steak dinner.
